All activities will be done with safety precautions: managing group sizes, wearing masks, social distancing and where necessary, wearing gloves.
Most of our service opportunities will occur at our church and then be carried into the community. The spirit of "InSide /OutSide" Church remains: reaching out in service to our community.
This year, children also have their own list of service projects as part of InSide/OutSide Church 2021. Kids will meet following children's time during 9:30 a.m. Worship Service on each Sunday of Lent beginning February 21st. The safety precautions listed above will also be in effect for kids. 2021 MSP Week HAS BEEN CANCELLED due to COVID 19 Precautions! Look for US NEXT YEAR!
This Senior High Youth Mission is hosted at First UMC, McAllen. There are many opportunities to help us host this mission. The youth and their sponsors come to serve families in our surrounding communities. Servant volunteers are needed to help with paperwork, cook, serve meals, deliver snacks, decorating, make cookies, etc!
There will be other opportunities throughout the year to serve!
First UMC S.O.S is another opportunity for us to serve in our community and invite others to join us! To be the church OUTSIDE our walls! SOS is a year-long relationship with Escandon Elementary. Since the COVID pandemic has caused the closing of schools, we have not planned any activities with Escandon. However, as soon as school resumes we hope to continue our in-person support of the school. It is our plan to do an activity for the teachers and staff during 20221 InSide/OutSide.
In the past years, we have helped support a clothing and supply closet at this south McAllen School who also hosts the Regional School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (RSD). Other opportunities to partner with this school are to host their RSD Students at Christmas time as they come to "Sign and Sing" Christmas Carols with us. We also support a breakfast for the Teachers during Teacher Appreciation.
Manna Food Pantry - During the COVID pandemic our Food Pantry has grown to serve over 735 families in our surrounding areas. We gather 4 times per month. Twice to assemble and prepare food for distribution, once to load trucks for distribution by four Community Center partnerships (serving 495 families), and once to distribute food at the church. All COVID precautions are enforced during these activities. Monthly emails are sent for people to signup to serve. Servant volunteers are needed!
If you have questions about this ministry just e-mail or call Susan Hellums, (956)686-3784 or email Carol Dearth,
Emily's Meals - COVID has affected so much of what we do and how we do it. This is a ministry for the homeless in our area. At this time only prepackaged lunches can be delivered to our homeless friends. In the past, meals (often hot lunches) are prepared at First UMC the first and third Thursday, and the first Saturday of every month. They are then delivered. This ministry is sponsored by the Woven Women's group of our church, however anyone is welcome to serve! Help is needed in the kitchen and then to deliver. If you are interested in helping with this ministry please e-mail Peggy Trom,
"In His Steps" Shoe Bank of McAllen - This ministry provides shoes to school-aged children in the McAllen ISD, with a pair of properly fitting shoes appropriate for school! If your gift of service is data entry and/or paperwork, here is a perfect way of serving! Since March 2020 this ministry has been affected by COVID. The schools have not been in session, in person and has affected it greatly. However, there is still paperwork to be done! Let us know if you are interested in learning more!
CarePortal - Our church partners with the CarePortal of Hidalgo County and child welfare! Child welfare workers uncover needs and CarePortal makes local churches aware, giving them a real-time opportunity to respond. CarePortal supports churches with a heart to help local children and families in crisis. Churches in the network own and sustain this work through time, prayer, and resources. Your help is needed!
Truck Ministry - We are often able to fulfill the needs of others by virtue of what we have been blessed with ourselves. The life and ministry of this church is no different in this respect. There are at times many opportunities where a truck is needed, such as hauling items for the respite center, Food Bank or Care Portal. If you have the blessing of owning a truck and want to assist in these opportunities and more, we are starting a truck ministry that will afford you another chance to bless others. To sign up or if you have questions contact Ken Wilson at: or call the church at 956-686-3784
