The mission of Methodist Healthcare Ministries of South Texas, Inc. [MHM] is "Serving Humanity to Honor God" by improving the physical, mental and spiritual health of those least served in the Rio Texas Conference area of the United Methodist Church. In 2007, Wesley Nurse program, previously known as Wesley Nurse Health Ministries, grew to 70 different faith-based locations throughout South Texas. The majority of the Wesley Nurse program sites are in churches in rural communities. Some are in larger cities, including a site at the historic San Fernando Cathedral in downtown San Antonio - the oldest Catholic cathedral in the United States. Wesley Nurses minister to those in need, working in partnership with others committed to the same mission within the church and community. By being based in a church, the needs of a specific congregation and community can be better addressed. The collaboration of church, Wesley Nurse, and community is the core of the Wesley Nurse program, as well as the Health Ministry Team model, committed to serving the least served through education, health promotion, partnerships in the community, and facilitation of resources. The program is centered on assisting the individual and community in achieving improved wellness involving a holistic approach, which includes the mind, body, and spirit through self-empowerment. Wesley Nurses are committed to establishing a standard of excellence in Faith Community Nursing.
