Read below for more information about our Adult Sunday School Classes. We are not meeting in-person at this time. Pre-covid the classes would meet every Sunday morning at 9:45 a.m.
The Open Door Class is a class interested in exploring what Jesus’ call to love one another truly means in our personal lives, in the life of the church, and in the world beyond. Through Bible studies, meaningful discussion, reflection and social action they hope to learn what it really means to “Follow Jesus.”
The Aldersgate Class is the longest existing class at First United Methodist Church, McAllen. Organized in 1952 as a young people’s class, it continues today for older adults. Men and women, who are interested in study of the Bible and Bible related topics, come together and learn how it relates to how we live in this day and time. They use the Adult Study Series with several class members rotating the teaching responsibilities. Several times a year class members gather after Church for lunch or at a member’s home for fun and fellowship. Visitors and new members are always welcome. The class meets from 9:45 - 10:45 am.
The Friendship Sunday School Class is made up of individuals who share a common desire to broaden their understanding of the scriptures and to incorporate into their lives the teachings of Christ. The Sunday morning lessons are taught by members of the class and occasionally invited guests. The study curriculum includes Bible studies, theology based study books and videos, Advent and Lenten studies, and other topics of interest. Also, the class has a strong commitment to providing help to people in need. During the year, the class enjoys social times together. The class members are eager to welcome all people into the class. The class meets from 9:45 - 10:45 am.
The Unity Class is made up of men & women interested in learning about the books of the Bible using the Scripture Press “Disciples’ Bible Study” series which alternates between Old and New Testament books.
The Class meetings are informal with some lecture (by Dr. Bob Dowell) with lots of ensuing discussion based on the information suggested in the quarterly student books provided and/or alternately sent via an e-newsletter (consisting of the study chapter, referenced bible verses and/or chapters, and a brief study guide) sent a few days before the Sunday’s study. “Ask Yourself” questions offer a personal way to reflect on practical applications of the Bible verses to everyday issues.
Several times a year, class members gather (Christmas or when the mood strikes) for an in-room brunch. Sometimes, contributions are made to special causes, like helping hurricane Harvey families with supplies, clothes, toys, etc. During the winter months, many Winter Texans join our class. The class meets from 9:45 - 10:30 am.
The Trinity Class is a unique, diverse, caring and fun group of class members who are committed to growing their faith in order to become better disciples of Jesus Christ. This class consists of members ranging from young couples with newborn children to seasoned members. Active and outgoing winter Texan members join them in October. Members of the Trinity Class are diverse in all categories. Members pride themselves in presenting their viewpoint often resulting in somewhat lively discussions concerning biblical issues in our current times. However, at all times the Trinity Class is a bible study class using the Adult Bible Studies curriculum. The Adult Bible Studies curriculum presents new curriculum quarterly. The class meets from 9:45 - 10:45 am
The Foundations Class, a multi-generational group, meets in Room #202. The class desires to build strong foundations in the lives of each class member through weekly Bible-based studies on today's relevant subjects. Multi-media tools and leader led discussions encourage sharing and faith growth. The role of teacher rotates among the members. They invite anyone who would like to learn more. They meet in Room 202 from 10:00-10:45 am.
